Managing Risk Outside the Classroom with Tim Gill
‘You can’t teach young people about risk from a text book – they need some practical experience. That’s why cosseting children and seeking to remove all risk from their experiences ultimately leaves them ill equipped for adult and working life.’
Judith Hackett, Chair of the Health and Safety Executive
Research has shown that risk management can be one of the biggest barriers to getting young people outside. However, organisations including Ofsted and the Health and Safety Executive support learning outside the classroom (LOtC) as a valuable way of helping children to learn about risk management and keep themselves safe. There is also growing recognition of the value of outdoor play for children of all ages.
To help address concerns about risk, the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom has teamed up with Tim Gill, one of the UK’s leading thinkers on childhood, to deliver training on managing risk outside the classroom.
About the course
Managing Risk Outside the Classroom will look at how to manage risk appropriately to ensure that young people get the most benefit from their LOtC experiences, and give you confidence in taking your learning outside safely.
Course description:
The course will look at why outdoor learning and play matter to children, what a balanced, thoughtful approach to managing risk looks like, and how this can be implemented within the school. The course will help school leaders to find a way through the confusion that abounds around the health and safety of students, and gain a clearer sense of direction and purpose.
It will set out a new approach, risk benefit assessment, that brings together thinking about risks and benefits, and supports well-grounded judgements about children’s learning and play outside the classroom.
Course dates:
26th September – The Mead School, Wiltshire
16th October – Viridor Laing Education Centre, Bolton
23rd October – The Parks Trust, Milton Keynes
7th November – Hazel Oak Special School, Solihull
