Residential OE Bill Vote
Last Thursday 28th March Scottish Parliament voted by 64 yes, 1 no and 53 abstentions in favour of the motion that the parliament agrees with the general principles of the Schools (Residential Outdoor Education) (Scotland) Bill. This was a Stage 1 vote which means the Bill will now progress to Stage 2.
There are many details and costings still to be worked out but it was really encouraging to hear so many speakers in parliament advocating for the benefits of outdoor learning. In its vision document SAPOE recognises that inclusive residential and adventurous experiences are an essential part of progressive outdoor learning and this requires Scotland to maintain a network of high-quality, accessible residential outdoor centres.
SAPOE also continues to support outdoor learning that can take place anywhere outside, from playgrounds to local parks, as well as a firm belief that everyone should have a chance to experience more challenging adventures in Scotland’s incredible wild places.
